Roughly two weeks ago I presented you all with the idea of publishing a book which contains the original works of Newsvine users. Since then a handful of you have submitted articles to be published.
This week, we move to Phase 2, voting on the content. Previous votes were for how profits if any would be handled. As it stands, you have said that you did want to make profit based on the base price of the book and given to a Newsvine listed charity.
To clarify this, what this actually means is that there will NOT be a portion of money going to charity, but ALL of the profit going to charity. If the total profit from every book sold equals.... 50,000 (unlikely, but a cool number nonetheless), then whatever charity organization you guys pick this week will receive 50,000 dollars. The cost of the book will be whatever it costs to make the book via BLURB. Generally, the book will be around $50, plus shipping and handling, PLUS what we set for profit. The charity will get profit as long as the profit exceeds $25 a month in sales, if the books sold do not make $25 a month in sales the profit rolls over until there is $25 or more to give out. I'll be setting up the address to send checks to through BLURB so that it will go directly to the charity, there will be no middle man between you, I, Newsvine and the Charity. The charity will know that it came from the Newsvine Community (because I have to tell them).
In any event, we now need to determine what percentage of the base price to set the profit at. If we say 10% and the base price is $50, then the profit per book would be $5. It's fairly simple and straight forward. Still, we need to figure a percentage.
Another thing we need to decide is to which charity should the money go?
Here is a list of the charity organizations via the charity navigator, found on every users' 'earnings' page.
CHARITIES
Now, for the time consuming part, and it's the most important part aside from the actual nominations so I really do need you guys to take a couple of hours out and really read them and judge them. I know that with all of the political "news" and news floating around we'll want to NOT read these and engage in some kind of moronic drivel over who's trying to kill who, why the government sucks, and how many people died where... it's important yes, you can't change that personally at this point - this you can. I'm just asking for maybe 2 hours of time. The world will still be ablaze when you get done and chances are, the same things will be burning at the points as when you left.
Also, these votes don't have a longevity requirement - none of them ever did. Just becuase you might be new to Newsvine doesn't mean you're new to quality. It's not a popularity contest, nor is it something that would make someone want to be your friend - there are no brownie points here, sorry. And, unlike public votes for President, these votes actually count.
Originally there were supposed to be a few articles for each NV category and a subdivided politics section. Given that a majority of things don't' have a classification, or are political I'm going to have to restructure the layout - how? Well, I'm open to suggestions. But, I digress... you want to go ahead and see what's up to vote for and vote so I can stop pushing you, I know...
ARTICLES
In an effort to give the book thickness and to remove the stress of going through and picking and voting on EVERY title here, only sections that have 5 or more nominations will need to be voted upon. Sections with 4 or less will be automatically included. The one exception to this is POLTICS - CENTER becuase the two submitted articles are by the same author. The top 4 vote receiving articles will be published (pending permission)
Politics - Right
"RIGHT" doesn't imply that the authors are right leaning, but that the content pertains either favorably or unfavorably to the 'right'. Likewise, "LEFT" simply means the articles pertain to the left side of the political fence, and not that the authors are left leaning.
Politics - Center
Yeah... only 2, by the same guy. So I'm only going to publish one - whichever of the two has the most votes - obviously.
Politics - LEFT
Social
Social includes extroverted observations or things that impact society
Breaking News
breaking news are the stories that user reported on because they were there. They are not political in nature.
Global
Global is just as it sounds - world events, national or international travel
Introspective / Testimonial . Narrative
Introspective is the section for articles about the auther, you know, events in their life, or things they recall horridly or fondly.
Wandering
"Wanderings" is sort of a unclassified section. It's things that have no specific home - they simply are.
Art
self explanatory.
Now... it looks like a lot to absorb and sort though, and it is. But, I never said it would be easy - I said it would be good. Some of you have heard me say this before - nothing good comes easy and nothing easy is any good. Anyway, I'd like to thank you guys thus far... the next phase will require next to nothing from you other than patience. This will turn out how you tell me to make it, so... be on point.
They seem to be back, because I can see them on the right of screen. I've just discovered Newsvine and haven't read any of the nominated articles, so I'll read through them, research the charities, then register all my votes at the same time.
You picked me!
I might just cry!
How can I be of help?
No "Global" poll?? Shall we post the answer?
Ahhh . . . duh, me!
Thanks, and sorry it wasn't clear to me!
I'm one of those invisible people
Me too. I feel ya!
I'm gonna watch-list you, just because!
I'll tell all who'll listen to the likes of me.
This is fun!
What talent we have here!
I so wish I'd have run across the other articles! Off the top of my head I can think of a half-dozen artcles to have submitted!
Are you on a time-line/dead-line?
I do know something about the amount of work that goes into a project like this, and I don't envy you!
I was Just wondering about a solution to the turn-out dilemma you'd mentioned.
Ok, I've read through everything and voted. For the ones without polls:
Breaking News: And Tuesday Shook
Global: Amsterdam 2000
Art: Santo Domingo
Oh ok. Sorry, I should have re-read your instructions.
