So I had this idea.

It's pretty simple really, and I think it should interest most if not all of you - you being everyone.

The idea is this:

I want to publish a book filled with the best of the best that Newsvine has offered us in 2008.

To do that, I'm going to need you, the readers and contributors to nominate 3 articles for publication. Of course it's not THAT simple, there are specifications.

They are:

  • The articles MUST be original works, not seeds with an attached opinion or epic comments.
  • The articles MUST follow the CoH (inciting, racist, hateful, spiteful, anything that would blatantly hurt another - is not allowed)
  • The articles MUST be from 2008 *and / or* 2007
  • The articles MUST have been published to "All of Newsvine" (i.e. Meta articles are not permitted)

This is non-negotiable.

These articles can range from poetry, politics, sports, breaking news (like Rob Ballews war coverage or Killfiles VA shooting coverage), or any category that you can publish to on Newsvine.

There is a format for submitting, which I'll explain.

Please (because it'll make my job with this much easier), follow the format.

  • Article 1 (linked)
  • Article 2 (linked)
  • Article 3 (linked)

There is a reason why I only want 3 nominations per user - if 100 users submit 3 articles then there are potentially 300 articles to vote upon. The top 50 would be selected to print. If the book it too big, it will be too expensive. Remember, this is to showcase and archive the BEST of the best. There is one exception - politics. I don't think it would be fair to publish more of one partisan leaning than another - it defeats the idea of "fair", so to make this happen, the poll for political articles will be split into "left', "right" and "middle" so that they are represented equally.

After a week or two of submissions (and after weeding out repeats), I'll create a series of polls for people to vote upon. I will then seek written permission from the authors of those articles to publish them. The vote will last for 7 days and what the poll tells me will be added to the book (if permitted). Authors who's articles received the highest number of votes would be asked to write a two to three paragraph section forward introducing the book section - for example, the "business' section article leader would write a few paragraphs summing up the year in business and the "entertainment" section article leader would do the same for the year in entertainment. Each could cover the section in broad terms or focus on a certain aspect - their article would have earned them the right to choose how and what they write for it.

Photos. Yes, I'm sure you're wondering "what about if the article has photos?"

Well, if the photo was taken by the article author, then obviously it will be included. If the photo came from flicker, then I'll have to track down the photographer and get permission (written) just as I would for the top articles to be published in the book. If I am unable to get photo permissions, then obviously the article will be published sans photo. Of course, anyone who is willing, may submit section photos - a photo that would visually represent that section, say... a line of American flags for politics, but the photo has to be of something that gives the idea of that section in a broad sense. A picture of video game set up for 'entertainment' is too focal.

Now, as with anything there exists a cost. The good news is that it isn't going to cost you or I to make it. I do the hard stuff, compile data and articles and you just feed that data to me. But, the service - Blurb, who I'm using for this and their program "booksmart" make us pay to actually print the book. The distribution is pretty simple. Peson A orders book from their website and they get it to their door. They have a base price for the book, which is determined by dimension and number of pages, so I can't tell anyone what it is as I don't know. Now, there is an option for profit, which I want none of. It's not my work in the pages therefore I deserve none of the money.

I'd like to, if a profit is involved, use the profit for a donation to where the authors collectively decide. I'd like to limit the choices to the same options that Newsvine has listed on the earnings page. The other idea is to have the profits go directly to Newsvine under the idea that they would support implementation of new features or other such stuff we like. Either way I'd like to steer clear of 'making' money on this in an individual sense - it's a community project so the money belongs to the community. The next question is, what should we agree the mark-up to be? percentage or set dollar?

If you'd like more information on the pricing and all thing money related, Blurb has a FAQ dedicated to that here.

I think in the end, it'll serve as a great asset in preserving and archiving the great articles on Newsvine (I'd like to, if this works out well, make this an annual project) that over time get pushed and forgotten in the growing sea of information while at the same time giving back to a community or our community (charity donation or supplemental features fund).

I thank you all for your time and apologize if this had a "scatterbrained" feel to it.

If you have suggestions or questions regarding this, just ask.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I know it can be hard to NOT nominate yourself, and if you want to , do so. But, my opinion is that since Booksmart is usable by anyone freely, they can publish their own book of their own articles all day long. The point is to point out what makes Newsvine great and sort of pay tribute to the great wrtiers. There isn't a qualifier for who can and can't nominate - new or veteran, young and old, republican or democrat - we share Newsvine alike. Let's preserve the best there is and put down on record the things that made Newsvine great as a whole.

My nominations are:

Very cool idea. Clipped to my column and newsviner's picks.

I will return with nominations

This might help - I had writers nominate their own best stuff here.

Scott, thanks.... most of that stuff is from 07... I was looking for 08 material, htough since this is a first annual (hopefully) It might be better to remove the '08' requirement.

I am trying to get what the community thinks are the best works and not just what is best in my opinion. We all have different tastes, as such I felt it would be best if "we" picked them and not "I" picked them.

That makes sense and I think it's best if we let others pick others best stuff rather than asking one person to say which of his own stuff is the best.

If you want to know which pieces I personally think are best by other viners... well, that's what I set

newsviner's picks
up for - as a place where people can point to what they see as the best of newsvine. Granted I had hoped that would turn into something where others would also be making picks instead of it becoming "scoop's picks" but oh well, it was, i think, a good idea. I had planned to do my latest picks aka the best of October but that was before i fried my own laptop.

Scott,

Okay... since I take your link as pretty much saying - take my pick from there here's what I've chosen for you:

I just pretended you were in a 'social impact and commentary" mood becuase you, like me are not really 'feeling' the election stats after a long two weeks of it - its over, time to focus on the road ahead not behind.

I'd like to suggest that you amend 'the rules' and break things down into categories. Three picks in each category with the winner in each making the book. It would open the voting up for more authors to be nominated and build a larger consensus. Like I've already said, too many choices. I based my choices strictly on the major news on the vine. Election, Racism and Troy Davis. I'd leave it up to your discression as to how wide or narrow to make this field.

Shawn, I just posted a link at my older piece asking people to swing over here.

Yes those are good picks. Sorry if I was short or rude - I fried my laptop so I'm haing to be a bit more abrupt than usual.

And yes I'm damn sick of the election which is funny because I'm usually a news and political junkie but I just couldn't take more.

The only election stories I'd nominate would be these wo by Ian (he just impresses with me just about everything he writes):

This one: It's Hard to Make Fun of Left-Wing Goofballs When Right-Wing Wolves are Devouring My Shin Bone

and this one on Top 10 Lists: What Liberals Should Know, What Conservatives Should Forget, What Centrists Should Do

and this conversation between Winsome and the girl about clowns

I know you said 2008 but let me beg your consideration of the three best pieces I've ever read here, all from 2007, two from CarolS and one from Firsty

my life with heroin and Dear Old Dad and Firsty's first person piece on 9/11

(sigh).... hmmm.... the articles are compelling, and there have not been a huge number of nominations. Give me a moment:

On one hand, it would be unfair becuase the submitted nominations were done by the standing rules. Allowing the 2007 articles would then mean that the previous nominations might not be the actual picks of the users.

On the other hand, limiting the year to only 2008 would significantly decrease the length of the book and may not give a true feeling for what is great on Newsvine. This year Newsvine has been wrought with election and political articles as staple frontpage items. Opening the year to cover 2007 would allow insertion of less political heavy topics...

ruling: I'll allow it. article rules amended.

If it would help the rules committee I'd note that the author of 2 of those 3 pieces is no longer active and i don't want to exempt anyone automatically just because life got in the way of recent pieces.

besides, newer isnt always better - look at new coke:0

Ah hell,  there are just too many choices! I guess I'll have to start off with a lesser known author:

k-stanz - Race.......the pink elephant in the room.....can we talk?

Ian Walter - If Obama Scares you, So Should I...

Vas - Silencing our Joy - A letter from Troy Davis's Sister

Although the last is not really an article written by Vas, I find it hard to believe that the letter posted by Vas from Martina Correia is not one of the most poignant and moving moments of the year. I would also like to suggest that the proceeds from the book go towards Troy Davis's defence.

As noble as a cause as that may be, I feel that in fairness and thus the spirit of the Vine, it is best if the proceeds go to the listed charaties in the Newsvine earnings page. I'm sure that many people feel Try davis is a worthy cause (myself included), but there may be an equal number of authors who do not and given that thier work would be published it would be a little unethical to force someone to fund something they do not back. When and if the time comes there will be a vote open only to the contributing authors to determine this.

I appreciate the input and thank you for your nominations.

I think Vas, in the context of Troy Davis would be an acceptable exception. If there can be a case made AGAINST doing that, I'll hear it, but for now - I'll allow it (given that I too picked a VAS article containing a letter written by someone else - which if your article nomination is deemd unfair, then so shall mine)

First, Blurb might be a problem, since they take a huge cut. Lulu or Cafepress might be a better alternative.

Second, is it one topic... or multiple? As in, just politics, or everything? I'm thinking it might be good to have just politics, because everything else will get drowned out anyway. Later, we can do a Sports book, a Tech book, etc. Even better, maybe make this devoted to the 2008 election.

Third, if you do put the money into a charity, make sure it's a non-partisan one like the Red Cross. Please.

        That being said...

It would also be nice if someone would nominate my if-msm-covered stories. *hint* *hint* ;-D

I don't see that as a problem. The point ISNT to make money for any reason. The main point is to preserve and showcase what the community feels was the best original articles on the site. The profit to charity is a bonus. I will however, check into both alternative suggestions.

Oh... and thanks.. you know what I'm talking about.

Ok... Lulu lacks the diversity and option in book size and cafepress doesn't offer book making (that I found).

If I had to estimate, this book will be around 300 pages in full color on premium paper. It's not intended to be some 'bargain bin' paperback that one would hurriedly buy in an airport. I'd like to make it something of a coffee table book. Ultra-cheap? probably not, but good work deserves a good home, right?

Yes, I did think about that, but it would be very hard to complie even handed articles that were not also repetative. As for outright writing a book.... not for me. I have too little time as it is. THIS is going to eat a lot of what I had free in just compiling it and so on.

        @azsky13

well... nominate the poetry too... anything that falls into the criteria of the article is up to nominate. Depending on the number of submissions the idea will go to the next stage and we'll vote on which ones will be included, which is to say that there is no need to second a nomination. Make a new one of a different article and when we vote THEN you can second a nomination in the vote.

        Thanks

        @yasmin

short fiction pieces are welcome - the point is to get the best of Newsvine in the book... so whatever you think is 'the @!$%#'... nominate it and we'll vote. If a certain section is too small we'll either incorporate it into another section or do away with that section (depending on the votes)

I'd rather like to take a look at it. If you're serious, I have a family member who is an exec at one of the largest reference/anthology publishers in the country. I'd be happy to get a dialog going if this idea comes to fruition.

But yeah, I think that it is a brilliant idea considering all of the content we have right here at our fingertips. As far as profit goes, I think it would be best to make enough profit to cover the book's expenses, etc and then donate the rest to a charity agreed upon by all contributers.

I'd sure as hell stick one of these on my coffee table.

I'm not sure I completely understand your concern. I have a publishing company on hand - its free to use. the price of the book is initially the price to manufacture (but I'm sure the company gets a cut of that so a book costing 12.85 really only costs $5 and they get the rest), however - if the book costs.... $90 (hypothetically - in reality I wont know until I submit it for printing, but I estimate around $90) and the vote is that the profit needs to be a set dollar, then I'd make it say $15 over 'manufacturing cost" and each book sold would have $15 go to wherever the community says it should go. As for seriousness, more so than three heart attacks back to back.

The nice thing is that there is no start up capital involved. The books are printed on demand (when someone orders one, it's printed so there is no stockpile of books unless I choose to do that in which case I'd pay for that out of pocket -but I wont do that because I don't have that kind of cash laying about)

Believe me, I'm not going to suggest an idea I wouldn't take part in. I myself would likely by 3. One for me and two to give to friends who are not familiar with Newsvine but have interest in this kind of thing. there are many latent opportunities both socially and for Newsvine as an entity / brand.

If I recall I did put a link to BLURB in the main article so if you have technical questions about the process you can see it, but if you have questions about the physical process on my end, feel free to ask anything you like and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

This sounds like a very good idea. I, however, am not qualified to vote on ANYTHING right now.

          1) The amount of work (I imagine) involved makes me feel dizzy and queasy. I have done so much election related work that now I am currently having trouble even opening my own mail. I may need several weeks in a spa (or a mental health facility).

          2) I am too much of a Newsvine novice. I still get confused and wounded by personal attacks when I have commented on something in, what I thought, was a neutral style.

          3) I am actually wondering if, what currently seems to pass as news, is a detriment to coherent thought.

If you want to do this, though, I would say, "Go for it!" The book, itself, when completed, might be an antidote to brain damage from all the writing that currently passes as good. By this I mean everything from Nicholas Sparks to wire stories. Unless things improve, I am beginning to wonder if written material should have a health warning, much like that on cigarettes.

You know, becuase you're you and no one will change that (and you're pretty good at being you - you're the best you there is), I think you are qualified to vote. You could even be a felon, I'll let you vote. You're 4 popped collars good...

1.) all you'd really be doing is picking the best three articles youv'e read on NV from 2008

2.) That's the beauty of this. No experience required! from HS dropouts to three PHD holding quantum physicists, you're all equally qualified to nominate based on opinion. I dont discriminate - hell, I even love haters.

3.) It doesnt ahve to be news. It can be anything that isn't about Newsvine itself. For example, this idea article would not be allowed in. An article about anything regarding a suggested change to Newsvine - cant get in. Actually, to be honest, the only reason SEEDS can't get in is becuase a seed links to someone else's work that the user didn't make themselves. Besides, I'm not looking to showcase Townhall.com or some AP Staff writer - I'm looking to showcase people who use NV, no matter how long or short their tenure, that wrote something original and also had community impact (something memorable)

It's easier than watching paint dry and a whole hell of a lot more productive. I promise, and my promises are good because I have an honest face (trust me on that) ---> :) (see?)

            what if I said "please?"

http://azsky13.newsvine.com/_news/2008/06/15/1577429-reflections-of-my-life by azsky13, this one just hit me in a soft spot and the photos to me are this snapshot of a life interrupted in a way while at the same time fresh and new, like even in the toughest times it was finding a way to carry on.  It was just powerful and very personal to me on several levels.

http://ianfwalter.newsvine.com/_news/2008/10/09/1975945-its-hard-to-make-fun-of-left-wing-goofballs-when-right-wing-wolves-are-devouring-my-shin-bone  by Ian Walter.  This one was just plain old common sense coming through.  Well written and timely during the election campaign.

http://stacymalbon.newsvine.com/_news/2008/08/30/1807330-after-raid-on-their-convergence-center-the-rnc-welcoming-commitee-holds-meeting-in-minneapolis-park  This was one of the first reports I read about what the hell was happening in Minneapolis during the RNC convention.  I was impressed with Stacy on this day and started following her around the vine.  This one had an edge to it for me, there was this uncertainty about what the hell was happening exactly up there.

God, I wish I read faster there are so many good articles out there and I've only been here a short time.   I could name so many good writers that I've read it was hard to pick 3 stories and I have alot of guys and gals I'm just watching still that are awesome.

unfortunately my new copy (legal) of InDesign isn't installing. Apparently Adobe has install issues with a lot of people. this is to say that I'm sort of limited in my ability and have to go with Blurb. I looked at a few others but they want some indesign files... (sigh)... I had hoped to sort of import a new layout design I had for this and abandon the blurb layouts (they're good, but... basic). Illustrator and Flash also won't install. Fortunately Photoshop and Dreamweaver work, but that's it. Adobe has one more very angry paying customer. I saved for a long time to get those - but I digress. The point - I have no way to hand anyone anything (unless they want MS publisher files - ick) and while the suggestion is appreciated, I fear I'd  be wasting his time.
